I hope this newsletter finds you doing well! It has been an unbelievably busy summer. The river will begin it's annual decline to 500 c.f.s. starting September 1st. It will take most of the month to get there because of the gradual drops but it's on it's way down. This will really heat up the fishing. I apologize for the lack of communication. I had a surgical procedure done on my back this past week which will hopefully help me finish the fishing year. I have been very fortunate to have several great guides working with us this year. They are working extremely hard and learning something new every day that insures every customer the best possible day of fishing they can have. The river is down finally and is scheduled to drop some more here soon then drop down to the winter flows of 500 cfs in the next month. The water is staying cool and getting more clear each day that we don't have rain. This is aiding in some great dry fly fishing in the morning's and evening's and any cloudy spell during the day. There are still some yellow sally's coming off but pmd's and caddis are the main hatch. We are having some decent trico hatches early and are gradually making their way down the river. We are also getting some crane flies and will be getting a decent golden stone fly hatch anytime. The rigs that have been working best for us lately have been nymphing big stones under an indicator. We have been dropping worms, leeches, pheasant tails, hares ears, caddis pupae, and micro stones off the stone flies and have really been doing well. Streamer fishing has been good when you land the fly right in their living room. Fish have been staying deep because of the clear skies and with the large amount of food floating down the river they aren't having to move very far to get full. The best strategy has been hit your spot, strip your slack, and dead drift with occasional slow strips. Hopper fishing is picking up and we are starting to have some decent hopper action blind casting banks. You can also feed the fish hoppers if you visually see a riser. Drift a hopper over his nose and he'll eat it. Stimulators and elk hair caddis have also been effective dry flies. If you have ever wanted to get into the warm water fishing for bass and carp we have the opportunity for you. We have been fishing for bass and carp on warm water lakes our entire lives and have figured out the techniques and times to get you into hundreds of pounds of fish to the boat daily. dry fly's for carp and casting streamers to the rocks for the smallmouth bass have been taking up most of our time. The great thing about this is that it is only 2 1/2 hours from the Denver area. If you have ever wanted to catch our freshwater's strongest fish and battle the tough fighting smallmouth up to 5 pounds all on flies then please get ahold of me before fall sets in. Again, I apologize for the delay on the updates and will hopefully have more time to update more often. I love being on the river and will end up spending over 250 days on it this year. Guiding is my passion and consumes most of my time. Unfortunately it doesn't leave me a whole lot of time to work on the computer. The more we are on the river the more successful you will be when you come fish with us. The other outfitters can say they have the most experienced guides but the truth is "Nobody has more days on this river than I do." We will continue to work hard to gain as much knowledge as we can to ensure you the best fishing trip you can have on the North Platte River. The Cowboy Drifter guides and I would like to thank you very much for taking the time to read this report and when I get time I will keep you updated on everyone's amazing trips and the fish they have been catching. Our cabin schedule fills up fast and is showing that it's going to be a very busy the next couple months with hunting season and world class fall dry fly and streamer fishing here, so if you want to come and try your luck at fish of a lifetime and spend a day with some of the countries best trout fishing guides please give us a call. If you want to try it on your own and don't need a guide still let us accommodate you in our first class cabins that sit directly on the bank of the world famous Grey Reef section of the North Platte River. These cabins are fit for the finest but are as affordable as a motel 6. Give us a shout and let us help you put together the trip of a lifetime. Take care, keep in touch, and God Bless!
