Spring fishing means BIG FISH!!!!

Here we go again. It's that time again folks and we are more excited than ever. With several new additions to Cowboy Drifters and a full service Fly Shop opening real soon we can't help but think this is going to be a great year for us all. The cabins are done and available for stays now. We have had several guests so far and have had nothing but great praises about them. This is the only public lodging on the upper part of the river so even do-it-yourselfers can enjoy a peaceful river side stay with an outstanding fishing run just a stones throw away. Sure wish gas prices weren't so high but I guess we have to play with cards we were dealt. This is probably the main factor in us not raising our prices for 2008. We are keeping our prices the same as we have for the past few years because we want you all to be able to come back each year and have a great experience with us regardless of the state of our economy. Just please remember to take care of your guide at the end of the day. We appreciate it.
Fishing so far this spring has been amazing. We have definitely seen last years age class of 16 inch fish grow to 18 plus inches this year. As always they are some of the hardest pulling fish in the country. Steamers of choice lately have been rabbit flavored in whites and tans and John Barr's Slum Busters both in sizes 4-6. Both of which are not on shelves yet but will be coming to the Cowboy Drifters Fly Shop soon located next to the Lusby boat ramp. Nymphing as always has been red hot using the standard rock worm and leech combo. With very clear water conditions smaller flies have seemed to be working better. 14-18 on the rock worms and 8-10's on the leeches. The rock worms are obviously red and best colors for the leeches have been brown or olive. Midges have also started popping real well so if you are having a slower day and want to switch things up a bit go with a size 18-20 midge pattern in black, brown, or red. Even though we don't fish many egg patterns with fish staging for the yearly spawn I have heard that egg patterns have also been getting pretty hot. With that in mind PLEASE remember that this is a natural fishery of wild trout so let them do their deed and PLEASE DON'T FISH THE REDDS!!! This takes absolutely zero skill and it does put a lot of un-needed stress on the fish. PLEASE be sportsman an sportswomen and let them be. It is our job to educate, preserve, and lead by example. Thank you! Just remember to give thanks and and praise to God for giving us all the opportunity to experience all of the wonderful creations on this earth, our families, our friends, and the breath we take everyday.
