Flush Is Done And The Fish Are Frisky!!

Hope you all are doing well. We have had some tough weather to deal with lately but we are still catching plenty of big pre-spawn rainbows. We also have caught a couple of really nice browns this past week who have been following the bows up the river in anticipation of getting fat on rainbow eggs. The fishing just keeps getting better everyday and hopefully the weather will cooperate and do the same. I can't imagine how many fish we would have been catching this past week if the wind hadn't been playing havoc on the fisherman's drifts. We are consistently producing 50 plus fish hook-ups per day and when the wind gives us a break that number jumps way up. Nymphing has been the ticket. Not much has changed with our set-ups. The hot flies are rock worms in sizes 12-18 depending on the water clarity. The leech patterns have also still been red hot. Browns, blacks, and olives have been the main colors in sizes 6-8. The midges have really been popping well when it warms up and johnny flashes, disco midges, and zebra midges seem to be the hot fly. We have been throwing black, chocolate, red, and occasional grey's for colors. The sizes have consistently stayed in the 18-20 range. I have seen a few baetis nymphs starting to appear and even an occasional adult B.W.O. on the water. It won't be long and the B.W.O.'s will be out in full force. Streamers are still working well as long as you use a very slow retrieve. Our best colors have been whites, tans, blacks, and olives in sizes 4-6. The river flow are stable at 500 c.f.s. and are supposed to stay that way until May. Our water temps. have been ranging between 35 and 38 degrees. Still way cold! The rainbows are staging and starting to spawn so remember to stay off the shallow gravel and be careful not to wade through the redds. PLEASE don't fish the spawners. There are plenty of fish in the runs still and sight fishing to spawners only increases their stress level and hurts them in the long run. This is a natural fishery of wild trout so lets do our part to conserve and manage this resource for people to enjoy in the future. Fishing will be totally closed off between the two cables below Grey Reef from April 1-30. Please let the fish do their deed and we will have an unbelievable fishery for years to come. Thank you! We still have cabins available for public lodging on the river bank at Lusby. April is one of the hottest month's to fish the North Platte and our schedules are filling up so check you calendars and let us know if we can help you set up a trout fishing experience of a lifetime. Keep in touch and hope to hear from you all soon.
